Capt Ferens joined Air Cadets at the age of 12 where he took every opportunity the program offered; traveling across the country for summer training and regionally-directed activities.  He aged out at the rank of WO2 and - wanting to give back to the program - he moved to 170 Air Cadet Squadron where he became a Civilian Instructor (CI).

After being trained as Administration Officer (AdmO) and spending a few years in that role, Capt Ferens started taking more training-related courses and moved into the role of level training officer.  Every few years, Capt Ferens would take on management of a different training level, along with his secondary task of managing music training.
