SQUADRON HISTORY

The Air Cadet League of Canada was officially incorporated in 1941, a voluntary organization working in partnership with the Royal Canadian Air Force to sponsor young men as future aircrew.

On 27 November 1942, a Charter for a new Squadron was issued to “220 Lord Selkirk Squadron”. The first parade took place at Lord Selkirk School, which is why 220 RCACS was initially “Lord Selkirk Squadron”. On 4 April 1944, the sponsorship was turned over to a civilian committee. The Squadron’s new base of operations was at the Winnipeg Badminton Club on River Road. It was at this time that the Squadron changed its banner to reflect its current name; 220 “Red River” RCACS.

In 1950, 500 “City of Winnipeg” Wing, Royal Canadian Air Force Association became the Squadron Sponsor. They were the sponsors for 31 years. In 1981 the squadron moved to its present location; Minto Armoury. On 19 November 1980 #4 St. James Legion became 220 Squadron’s sponsor and to this day, they continue to provide support and liaison to the Cadet Program.

We are proudly sponsored by Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc., led by President and CEO; Honorary Colonel Barry Rempel, while strongly administrated by our Squadron Sponsoring Committee; and Sqn Parent’s Committee, Chaired by Mr. Alex Ethier.

The Air Cadet Program helps develop skills that will help youth transition into adulthood. From good citizenship, leadership, and a focus on physical fitness, Cadets have experiences that you don’t find anywhere else, all while learning about the Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Air Cadets focus on aviation related activities including flying, gliding and studies in aerospace.
